The 2.5-meter-long rectangular piece of cloth known as a dupatta has been worn by women in the Indian sub-continent for many decades if not centuries. It is multi-functional and versatile serving many purposes, some of them being:
- · Enhancing overall look of the outfit
- · Provides cover up of the body (think modesty)
- · Protect from the scorching sun
- · Handy hand kerchief (well, a very long hanky)
- · Changing look of the outfit by changing the draping style
- · Mix n match with multiple kurtis, lehengas
This humble dupatta has few siblings like:
- · Stole - narrower and shorter than a dupatta
- · Scarf – squarish piece of fabric
These siblings are gaining popularity in India too now and can be styled with western outfits as well. All these siblings are produced on a variety of base fabrics with different embellishment / surface ornamentation techniques.
